Hugh and Permelia (Barton) Young; +2 Thomas Brooks

Hugh Young was born 10 February 1768 in Ireland.  It is unknown when he arrived in America, but was likely around 1800.  He was naturalized 13 Dec 1802 at the US District Court in Baltimore, Maryland. According to the Naturalization Act of 1790, a citizen had to live within the United States for two years prior to filing for citizenship, therefore the assumption of arriving in 1800 or sometime in the late 1790s.  The 1800 census shows 2 Hugh Young’s living in the Baltimore area; one in the city and the other residing in Harford County, Maryland just north of the city.  However, both of these listings appear to have young children in the household and are likely not “our” Hugh Young.  Hugh married Permelia Barton in Harford County on 22 Dec 1806.  Permelia was born 28 Sep 1768 in Baltimore County, Maryland to James Barton and Margaret Smithson.   The birth date can be found in the Maryland Births and Christenings Index, 1662-1911, which lists the place of birth as Saint James’ Protestant Episcopal Parish, Baltimore, Baltimore, Maryland, and her parents as “James Barton” and “Margaret.”  Millie likely grew up in Harford County, and met Hugh there.  After their marriage, it is difficult to tell exactly where they lived until 1820.  The last child known to be born in Maryland was John Thomas in Nov 1813.  The 1810 census does not list a Hugh Young in Harford County, so it is likely that the family moved further west but remained in Maryland.  A Hugh Young does appear in Frederick County which has the appropriate number of children, however, a female aged between 10-16 is among them.  Daughter Ann, the presumed eldest daughter was not born until around 1811, so it could be that there was a clerical error, or that this is the incorrect Hugh Young.  I chose to believe that the marking is in error and included the census in the residence portion.  Between 1814 and 1820, the family moved to Meigs County, Ohio, just west of the Ohio River.  The area is extremely rural and primarily farmland among the rolling foot hills of Appalachia.  Hugh worked as a farmer, first in Orange Township in 1820, and then in Bedford Township in 1830.  Hugh passed away in Meigs County on 22 Jun 1831, and was buried in Bing-Barton Cemtery in Meigs County.  His will, dated 28 May 1831, left his free held estate to his “beloved wife Milla,” until her marriage or death, at which time it would be divided among his children Daniel S, James B, Hugh, John Thomas, Robert Alexandria [sic] Andrew Jackson, Margaret, Sary Ann, Catherine Amelia, Mary, and Elizabeth.  The other children, George Washington, John Wesley, and Ann Jarrett, each received the sum of one dollar.

Permelia and the younger children are not found in the 1840 census, but it is presumed that she continued to live in Meigs County.  She would remarry in 1843 to Thomas Brooks, a widowed farmer, on 2 Feb.  Very little is known about Thomas up to the time that he married Permelia.  The couple is found in the 1860 and 1870 censuses living in Scipio Township of Meigs County.   Neither are found in the 1880 census, so it is presumed that they died sometime in the 1870s.
