James Edwin and Bertha Mae (Wallace) Watson

Bertha Wallace and Edd Watson Wedding DayBertha Mae Wallace was born 18 Oct 1883 just south of the town of Roseville, Illinois.  She grew up in Ellison Township of Warren County, where she also attended school.  The 1900 census lists her as living with her grandparents, Richard and Mary Jane Wilcox.  Her parents and siblings lived in Kirkwood at the time.  It is possible that this was right around the time that her family moved, and she remained in Ellison Township in order to finish her schooling.  On 12 Feb 1908, Bersie, as she was often called, married James Edwin Watson.  Ed was born 16 Sep 1878 in Warren County, the son of James Watson and Mary Jane Godfrey.  The Watson family was well established in the Olena area in Henderson County.  The couple never had any children of their own, but took in Ruth and Lois Wallace, the children of Bersie’s brother William, after the death of their mother Orpha in 1918.  Bersie and Ed raised the girls as their own.   Ed farmed throughout his life, at first farming on rented ground until he moved into their home on the southern edge of Tompkins Township.  The Watson homestead was built in 1878 by Ed’s maternal grandparents.  Bertha was active in the Liberty Methodist Chapel in Ponemah, and later the Smithshire Methodist Church, after the former was disbanded.  Ed continued to work into his 80s.  On 24 Mar 1861, while driving through a pasture east of the house, Ed suffered a heart attack and drove his car through a fence and into the roadside ditch, killing him instantly.  After the death of Ed, Bertha lived with Ruth and Jack Hines.  She had been experiencing faded health and eventually passed away less than a year later on 8 Nov 1961 at Ruth’s home.
