John and Drucilla (Bonar) Filson

John Filson was born around 1821 in Pennsylvania.  It is unknown who his parents were, but Maryland Filson's made their way into Pennsylvania at the time.  John moved to Holmes County, Ohio where he met and married Drucilla Bonar.  In 1850, John lived in Hardy Township with his younger sister Hannah, so it is reasonable to believe that their parents had passed by this time.  By this time, he was working at his lifelong trade as a carpenter.  Drucilla was born in 1824 in Ohio and was named after her paternal grandmother, Drusilla Dickerson.  Her parents moved to Ohio in the late teens or early twenties and started their family.  Around 1825 they moved back to Pennsylvania, but again returned in 1830.  Finally settling in Mechanic Township of Holmes County, Drucilla lived with her family until her marriage to John on 20 May 1852 in Holmes County.  Shortly after their marriage, the couple moved to Van Buren County, Iowa, along with Drucilla's younger brother Daniel.  The 1856 Iowa census lists Daniel living with his sister and brother-in-law in Union Township, near Birmingham, and working as a plasterer.  John's occupation is not listed but it is likely that the two men worked together in the construction business.  By 1860, their first child, Henrietta, was 2 years old.  They would parent 3 more children, all of whom attended school in the area.  John continued to work as a carpenter, making a modest, yet livable salary, while Drucilla cared for the children and kept house.  It is unknown when or where John and Drucilla died, but both more than likely passed sometime between 1880 and 1900, as they fail to appear in later censuses.  While I have been unable to find where they were buried, it is probable that they both died and are buried in Van Buren County, though they may have moved to Missouri at some point as their children Henrietta and James moved there in the early 1890s.  This could account for their absence from the extensive Iowa cemetery records, as Missouri's records are much more scarce.
